How to Science: Tumor-Driving Transcription Factors in Development and Cancer
Join us for a special How to Science workshop led by Dr. Bart Westerman (Amsterdam UMC), an internationally recognized researcher in pharmacogenomics, cancer biology, and precision medicine.
Date: 10 June 2026
Time: 15:00–18:00
Location: CMI_2/DD/02
How do cancers hijack the biological programs that normally drive organ development? How can genomic data help us identify new therapeutic targets?
In this interactive workshop, you will explore how transcription factors – the key regulators of gene expression – control normal organ development and how their dysregulation contributes to cancer.
Why attend?
✔ Learn directly from an expert in cancer genomics and precision medicine
✔ Explore real-world datasets and research tools used by scientists
✔ Strengthen your literature review and critical analysis skills
✔ Discover how genomics and AI are transforming cancer research
✔ No prior programming or bioinformatics experience required
Working in small groups, participants will investigate real cancer genomics data and explore questions such as:
• Which transcription factors are essential for normal organ development?
• How are these factors altered in cancer?
• What evidence supports their role as oncogenes or tumor suppressors?
• Can they be targeted therapeutically?
