28th International Students' Scientific Conference (ISSC)

4.05.2023

Nearly 150 registered participants, over 100 presentations, and 15 scientific sessions – these numbers summarize the 28th International Student Scientific Conference (ISSC), which was held at Medical University of Gdańsk from April 13th to 15th. The conference is an annual event organized by Student Scientific Society (STN GUMed).

Representing the authorities of the Gdańsk Medical University during the conference were Dr. hab. Tomasz Smiatacz, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, and Prof. Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science. The inaugural lecture on innovations in medicine was given by Prof. Paul Grundemann, visiting professor from the University Medical Center Utrecht. Another foreign guest was Dr. Giulia Marvaso, a medical assistant at the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia IRCCS in Milan and researcher at the Department of Oncology and Hemato-oncology at the University of Milan.

During the next two days, young researchers from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Scotland, and Nigeria presented original works and case studies in several thematic sessions covering surgery, pediatrics, cardiology, hematology, endocrinology, general medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, psychology and psychiatry, obstetrics, as well as basic sciences. There was also a poster session on oncology.

“This was the largest and most successful edition of ISSC so far. We are happy that we could encourage so many young scientists to come to Gdańsk and present their work, even from abroad. ISSC shows how important science is for our education and how important cooperation and exchange of ideas are between participants from around the world. I am most proud of our team. Everyone worked incredibly hard to create a professional and successful conference. Our students showed creativity, collaboration, and determination to make ISSC an important event on every student’s calendar,” summarized Shraddha Singh, Chair of the Conference Organizing Committee.

For the second time, special awards of PLN 2,000 sponsored by Servier Polska were granted to authors of the best scientific presentations. The awards are a form of scholarship that laureates can use to cover the costs associated with participating in the scientific conference of their choice. The awards were presented during the closing ceremony, which was accompanied by a lecture by Prof. Miłosz Jaguszewski from the First Department and Clinic of Cardiology of Gdańsk Medical University. Another award of PLN 500 for the best poster presented during the poster session at the conference was sponsored by DeGruyter Publishing.

The Servier Polska-funded scientific awards were granted to: Victor Nweze, University of Nigeria, in the Biomedical Sciences session: Profiling the Antidiabetic Compounds of Bidens pilosa targeted Towards Glucokinase (1V4S) Activation: A Computational Insight
Mikolaj Kuncewicz, Medical University of Warsaw, in the Oncology Session: Long-term outcomes of liver transplantation for unresectable metastatic neuroendocrine tumours
Jakub Zimodro, Medical University of Warsaw, in the Cardiology Session: Role of copeptin in heart failure management: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The DeGruyter Publishing-funded poster session award was granted to: Inez Mruk from Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology UG & MUG: In Vitro Fertilization and Mass Spectrometry and: In Search of Oocyte Quality Peptide Biomarker

The Conference Organization was supported by the Office of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Program
